February 24, 2014 - Franklin Park, IL

Hey everyone! Happy Monday!
I'll be honest. We had a really weird week, and our most solid people
all decided to bail on us, all in the same week. Sooooo If you're
looking for some good missionary experiences to read about- this
letter will be the one to disappoint. But here we go with the three
next interesting things. Health, weather, and food.
I had the WORST cold Tuesday and Wednesday. I'm half proud of myself
for going just about a year without being sick. We had a combined zone
training meeting on Tuesday- when we got home at about 5pm, I took my
NyQuil and I was out until 10am the next morning. Yup. Best sleep I've
gotten on my whole mission. I guess crazy colds come when the weather
is in the single digits one day, and the high 40's the next. Chicago
weather is one of a kind.
I woke on Thursday morning to a thunder/lightning storm. It wasn't
snow! Words can't describe how one feels to see rain after 4 long
months of blizzard weather. And now there's grass poking out. Miracle!
Ate more spaghetti and lasagna this week than in my whole mission
altogether. Idk how English missionaries do it. Where da beans and
rice at!? Food consumed also includes canolis (spelling? You know,
those Italian pastries that I go wild for), cheesecake from Cheesecake
Factory, and the best Pupusas around (I think that's how it's
spelled....whoever has been to or served around people from Ecuador/El
Salvador/Guatemala know what I'm talking about).
Follow up on the mention in last weeks letter. The one member family
we taught, and afterwards, the Hermano had the idea to have us teach
all of his neighbors. Yeah. So he started with the old, recently-ish
widowed, Italian lady who lives at the beginning of the street. She
joined us for our 9am breakfast appointment with the family.
Awesomeeeee! This is all I'm going to say. If this cute Hispanic man
can wake up early on Saturday, which is his only day to sleep in, make
a delicious breakfast, share it with the two missionaries and his
English-speaking neighbor who 1. He doesn't know very well and 2.
can't communicate with him (he knows VERY basic English- but luckily
his wife is fluent in English and can help him out a little)--- simply
because he wants to help us share this message with others, and
because he not only sees but also understands his key role and
responsibility in this work. Something they pounded into us in the
MTC. It's not our work. It's not their, the members, work. It's His
work, and as members of His church- we hold and share that
responsibility to ALL be missionaries. Incase you're not following-
INTRODUCE THE MISSIONARIES TO YOUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS. What's the
worst that could happen?
Promise not to chastise again.
As a Facebook missionary- it's hard not to read and see all that's
being posted about what's going on in Ukraine and Venezuela. Hermana
Pearson and I were talking yesterday about how all of this makes us
think about the second coming....which leads me to think about how The
Lord really is hastening his work. As cliche as it sounds- we truly
are the light among the darkness. Don't hide it, people.
Y'all are the best.
Love you all!!!
Hermana Mortensen
