August 18, 2014 - Chicago 5th

Greetings loved ones!
It's weird thinking back on the Monday mornings where I've thought to
myself, "It's gonna be nuts having to write that last email"....and
now that it's here, I'm not sure what to say.  The only thing that
really stands out in my mind is what came to me when I gave my final
testimony at zone conference two weeks ago.
With that being said...My first mission president, President Fenn,
told us something early on in my mission that really stuck with
me...he said, " A mission is a series of disappointing events,
interrupted occasionally by moments of indescribable joy". Yes. I
think any reasonable return missionary or current missionary could and
would agree with that statement - or I would at least hope so.
Either way, that's been the last 18 months of my life in a nutshell.
Some of the hardest, darkest moments- sprinkled here and there with
experiences that have forever changed me; easily to be ranked with the
most joyous times of my life.
As hard as it is to remember, honestly, the "disappointing
events"...the truth is, none of those things matter, or ever will. For
example. The incorrect/embarrassing things I've said in Spanish, or
the many times I've been made fun of for not communicating that well.
Doesn't matter. Or the countless times of being rejected. The
"problem" companions (?)...the ones that have become some of my
closest friends now. My personal favorite, all of the 3 or sometimes
4-a-day eating appointments, and feeling like my body would never
recover. I swear I've eaten a few thousand tortillas in the last
18months. Haha. But for real, Some of the worst times ....when one of
your investigators relapses ...or change their mind about receiving
us, after hearing anti-Mormon stuff. Oh, and can't forget the -40
degree, sometimes even colder, weather that Miss Mother Nature threw
at us this past winter. That was pretty rough too.
Okay, but here's the good part. All of that was replaced with even
better little tender mercies. Just off the top of my head... the 11yr
old investigator telling us about the "happy feeling he feels in his
stomach" when we teach him, and then him telling us the following week
about when he shared everything he learned with his little friends at
school....or his grandma who hasn't been to church in years, but cries
tears of joy when she tells us about how happy she is now that she's
going.
Haha, or while on exchanges, contacting a homeless man in the street
and crying with him as we watch "Because of Him" <----- if you haven't
seen it....DO IT NOW!!!
Or the sweet little 80something yr old investigator walking at his
slow pace into church, even though he doesn't feel well and he should
probably be back home.
The grandparents of two other investigators, the ones who haven't been
to church in 20+ yrs but ask what they need to do to start taking the
sacrament again, because they want the happiness they once had, back
in their family.
And my personal favorite? Ending all of this with a nice bike ride
home in the dark, surrounded by the little fireflies. As cheesy as it
sounds-- it's really the best thing ever.
I guess that is what my mission has been. So much "hard", filled with
so much "better". I've found that the best always comes after the days
that seemed would never end. I'm so thankful for the decision I made
almost 2 years ago to serve. I left some, but gained even more.
I know that God loves us all so much. It's easy to see! He has given
us our families. The gospel. And more importantly, He has given us His
son, Jesus Christ. I know Christ lives and is the way for us to return
spotless to our Heavenly Father.
I can't wait to see all of you shortly! Thanks a million for the
support and love you've sent out here to me over the last year and a
half!
Love you all!
Hermana Mortensen

First day. Last day.

I LOVE CHICAGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
....mind you it was supposed to rain today, but I was blessed with
some killer blue skies! #Imgoingtomissthisplace

Monday, August 11, 2014 - Chicago 5th

Helllooooo!
First off. I believe that this past week should win an award for most
stressful, emotionally draining, physically tiring week. It was nuts.
Just as a little background info, all 8 of us missionaries in the ward
have been planning for the last month, our 'Super Noche de
Hogar'...Family home evening/ward party, that took place this past
Friday. Our ward hasn't had one in a few years, from what I
understand, and so all of the ward leadership + ward missionary leader
were a little hesitant to have us do one. More like, they told us it
was a bad idea and no one was gonna come. Haha okayyyy. No pressure.
So any spare minute we had this week, it was spent getting things put
together.
With all that being said.....
Tuesday was probably the most calm, normal day of the week. Pretty
standard....minus the fact that we got in with the two boy, Melvin and
Benji!!!! So cute. The grandparents, the "returning to activity after
20 years" ones, told us that the non member mom of the boys wants them
baptized in our church, YESSSSS(!), and then the grandparents asked us
what they need to do to start taking the sacrament again. Ah. Such
tender moments with these people! Love them!

Thursday. I had my last zone meeting! Do you know what that means? I
had to give my "dying testimony" with the other 6 dying missionaries in
the zone. I was so scared! And sad. Mostly sad. Afterwards. We had a dinner appt with our other returning to activity member, Hna Ramos...she's the best! She's from Puerto Rico and she knows how much I love jibarritos....those sandwiches made with fried/smooshed banana rather than bread.  She got a little creative and made them for us- she had never made them before, but they were s
till oh so tasty! Taught her grandson, Brian, after that...he committed to baptism! Woohoo! And after all of this, the family Quevedo came down again and took us out to dinner, round two. Had an AMAZING time. Shared some good
memories, ended up crying in the end, and somehow snuck in a hug from
Hermano at the end :)

Friday. Rewind a little. Thursday night we got a call from the zone
leaders saying we had to be at the church Friday morning to pick up
our mini missionary. So we pick her up. She's complaining
right off the bat about not wanting to bike with us....sorry kiddo,
but that's how we roll around here.  We had our usual lesson with
Jose and Juana afterwards -- this time though, President Woodbury
wanted to join us to kind of walk Jose through the whole marriage
thing.  Rushed to the church right after that. Spent the next 3 or so hours setting up for the FHE. Got it started after about 20 or so people showed.

Crazy awkward at first because no one was sitting by each other or anything,
so what'd we do? Took away some of the tables and basically forced them to.
Missionaries 1. Members 0.  Guess who showed up though! The two
families mentioned above! Hna Ramos and Brian, and then the familia
Cardenas, Benji and Melvin! We almost died, we were so happy they
came! Played "matchmaker", if you will, and got them all people to sit
with. Anyway, as big of a nightmare as it was in the beginning-- it
actually turned out really good, and we had a decent turn out :)

Saturday. Taught Manuel again. Taught him the plan of salvation, which
he loved...and then committed him to baptism too! Solid! Thennnnnnnnn
we spent the next little while calling Mexico and trying to figure out
marriage laws and stuff for Jose and Juana - in hopes of getting them
married this weekend, and him baptized. Any luck? No, not really.
Taught a slightly crazy Peruvian lady that lives in the far far far
north part of one of the elders areas. Again. Crazy. She went off for
a good amount of time about her special nativity set, and then made me
take a picture and promise to send it to you all. Hahaha okayyyyyyyy
lady.
Sunday went like this. Studies. Meeting. Church. Snapped a few
pictures with the other missionaries in the district +their mini
missionary. Testimony meeting with all the mini missionaries. Picked
up our second mini missionary. Go home. Get the first mini
missionaries stuff packed and out. The elders swing by with an extra
bike for the second mini missionary. Make dinner. Sit down. Get a call
from the second mini missionary's mom saying she has to go home. They
pick her up. We eat. And then bed. I could seriously sleep for days
#MiCuerpoEstaListo.

The time is rapidly winding down, but I'm thankful for the time I've
had and time I still have left! #gonnamakeitALLcount #prayforme.

Love you all!
Hermana Mortensen

The third picture is the nativity set....just in case you can't tell.
If you look above the well lit little houses, the nativity is inside
the little cave thing. Reallllllll weird. Hahaha. Trujillo liked it,
so maybe it's a Hispanic thing. No se.

July 28, 2014 - Chicago 5th

Hola!
This week was fantastic! Really, I wish I had a little camera attached
to me so that all of you could witness this. H. Trujillo and I are
just having such an awesome time and we're really seeing things start
to happen.
All of our "solid" lessons bailed on us on Tuesday night, so we ended
up doing some needed updating on our referrals list- and called a gem
of a man, Manuel! Called him up and he told us he was at his
restaurant and open to have us come right then and there. So we go and
meet him, and immediately he starts telling us about all of this crazy
stuff that's been happening to him-- I'll spare the details, but he
essentially sees demons inside of people...really dark stuff. After
explaining all of that though, he tells us about the Jehovah Witness
missionaries he met that were real nice and some Jehovah witness lady
he met in the hospital that was also kind.....but somehow he ended up
with us? We're still confused about that. Buttttt, he said he's
willing to do ANYTHING to help him come closer to Christ...so there's
big hopes for him :)

Wednesday. Hermana Trujillo had a mini bike crash.

Thursday. Had the most perfect lesson with the most perfect little
11yr old boy. Ah. He's the grandson of a less active that we've been
working with as of recent. We hadn't started teaching him earlier
because we didn't have permission from his mom and he's been asleep
the last few weeks...kids who sleep till 11am, I'll never understand ;)
Anyway, we finally got to begin teaching him this week- and
it went as perfectly as it probably could have.  Afterwards, he
came up to Hermana Trujillo and told us that he had a funny feeling in
his stomach while we were teaching and then he felt really happy.
Ahhhhh! So heart warming. He was asleep this morning and missed

church but attached is part of the conversation we had with him on
el face.  According to his grandma, he completed his other "mission",
aka homework assignment to start reading the Book of Mormon...he
did it and was able to recite exactly what was going on. Genius!

We had exchanges on Friday and I went to the loop with Hna Izu,

aka la chinita. Remember her? I've only been with her my whole life.
Anyway, we visited one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE PEOPLE, which

means a lot seeing that I've only seen her twice.  If the whole world
knew this lady- I'm telling you, it'd be a different place. I'm also
including a picture of her. Notice how nicely she fits?

Saturday. Hermana Trujillo had a bigger bike accident.  I tried to be

strong and help her....then I saw the little amount of blood and she
was on her own.

Sunday. Went down to the south side for a baptism in H.Trujillo's
area. May have taken two hours to get there and two more back...

but we made some pretty sick contacts on the train ride!

Hope you all are well!
Love you!

Hermana Mortensen

July 21, 2014 Chicago 5th

Hey world heyyyy!
Feels like I was just here writing you what's going on. I guess time really is starting to fly:/
-To start it off. When Trujillo first got here, we made a list of all the things I wanted to do/see/accomplish before ending.  Last Monday we were extra productive and marked a few of those off. Chinatown in the morning. City in the early afternoon. Little Mexican Village with Hna Kenedy and Ramirez. And then back to our area to do some thrift shopping. Lesson(s) to be learned from this? 1. Chicago has got to be one of the coolest cities ever, and 2. Public transportation used wisely is THE best thing ever.

-Tuesday. Trujillo surprised me with pancakes and "lechera" (sweetened condensed milk), in bed. What a dream. This girl is the best.  Unfortunately, the little Peruvian family in the ward had to throw off our groove and make us "cow cow"...not sure how they spell it, but that's how it's pronounced. It was basically curry/menudo. We both almost died. Trujillo threw it up afterwards...and she's the native that likes normal menudo. Haha the curry menudo easily places as the second worst thing I've eaten. Of course, had to end the night with elote. It heals all wounds. Hahaha, I'm reading over my journal from the last week. Real talk. Random stuff.

-Had my last interview with president...well, not the last last one. You know, the dying one. But the one before. That was chill. We reminisced on when I was still a greeny. Training. And really scared. It was ....nice.

-Jose told us how much he liked church and wants to keep going. Beforehand. We thought he was gonna drop us. Homeboy gives off a lot of mixed messages.

-Went to meet an investigator at the Mexican ice cream shop. Got stood up. Ended up buying an Oreo ice cream popsicle, so that it didn't look like we were just bumming off their wifi. New addiction right there. Who knew it could be so good!

-Helped the other Hermanas set up for their wedding/baptism on Saturday. Nuts. But surprisingly went smoothly.

-ALL OF OUR FAVORITE PEOPLE CAME TO CHURCH YESTERDAY!!!!!!!!! Three people that we've been working with that have been inactive for YEARS! Seriously. So so so happy that they came. And remember that inactive guy and his two grandsons that we've been teaching? They came too!. Melvin and Benji looked all dapper in their button up shirts and all. We showed them around the church and they loved it! They recognized all of the pictures that are in the pamphlets we gave them. Their favorite one though? The picture of the second coming, with Christ and all the angels round about. Ah. They just melt my heart. Mmm. I feel as if the rest of the week can be summed up nicely with the use of my handy dandy album of selfies.

Love this work. Love The Lord. Love you all! Hermana Mortensen

President Woodbury!

Sometimes we cruise down the road and what do we find? Bentley after Lamborghini. Woof.

Cute, cholo, grandson of one of our members. Haha. Perfect hairline and eyebrows. #childswag

July 14, 2014 Chicago 5th

Hey world, heyyy!
Real talk. We had a week. Hna Trujillo and I have been killing it out
here! She's awesome. She reminds me a lot of Melissa Prater. We
pretty much just laugh all the time...and then when it's business
time, she's pretty powerful. I haven't laughed this much in quite some
time!

Right off the bat, Tuesday. We were riding the bus , almost to our
stop , when this sweet old lady moves towards to us and starts like
this in her broken English, "you two are so beautiful! I love your
skirt. I love your hair. You're Mormons. They used to visit me. Please
visit me. Here's my number. Please call.  don't forget me. DONT FORGET
ABOUT ME!". We stepped off the bus. Called her and made an appointment
for Saturday....I'll get back to this lady.

Thursday. We were leaving an appointment , walking down this
neighborhood street, when we see this depressed looking lady. We
walked a little past. Both stopped. Look at each other and say, we
gotta talk to her. When we start walking towards her, she looks up and
says something along the lines of, "oh gosh, not now. Jehovah
Witness'?" Haha no. Mormons. She told us like 5 times she didn't want
to talk and she didn't need anything...not even a hug(!), but Trujillo
really doesn't take 'no' well...so finally she agreed to let us sit
next to her on her porch and listen to her. She told us everything.
And really, it made me sad. It hurts to see people, strangers
included, so down in life...even to the point of contemplating
suicide. But being able to testify of the love God has for us, and in
giving us His Son, made it all a little a better. She told us that she
took us showing up as a sign from God that he's watching over
her....and that she needs Him again in her life. Unfortunately, she
didn't come to church yesterday-- but hopefully we'll see her again
shortly.

WE GOT BIKES. I'm officially a biking missionary. Haha psych. We're
still pretty hybrid. Bikes. Bus. Train. Feet. Whatever we're feeling
that day. Haha biking here though? Woo. It's a little scary. Trujillo
reassures me that I'm not going to die...but still...it's a little
scary sometimes. Adrenaline rush for sure. Friday night we were
cruisin home, when the lady in the car next to me and yells 'GET
PANTS!'. According to Trujillo, I wasn't flashing anyone....I guess
she was just jealous of the fact that we ride hard in skirts.
That night though, we had an awesome lesson with that inactive member
and his two grandsons, Benji and Melvin. Seriously, I want to adopt
these boys so badly. We haven't seen them in a month or so, but they
showed us how they had started reading the Book of Mormon. I haven't
had much experience in my mission teaching kids-- but really, these
two are the best! Such true intention to follow and do what's right.
It's in moments like that how I can see why we're commanded to be like
kids. Even though they were a little confused and kept referring to
the movie 'Son of God' (that's the new-ish Hollywood video, right?),
they were still so perfect.

Lastly. Saturday night, we met with the lady we met on the bus on
Tuesday. Nuts. She went on and on about how she accepts everyone who
talks about Christ, how much she LOVES Christ, how she'd do anything
to follow Christ.....and as soon as we pull out the Book of Mormon,
she shunned us as if we had the Black Plague. Basically quoted 2Nephi
29:3. Multiple times. I guess the missionaries in the past only read
to her in the Bible. That's good and all...but true conversion comes
from the Book of Mormon. I so badly wanted to read a little from 3Nefi
11...or ANYWHERE, really. More so, I wish I would have taken my BOM
that I read and marked EVERY reference to Christ and His atonement.
Open it to any page, and it'll be impossible to deny that it truly
testifies of Christ.

José and Jorge came to church! This is Jose's fourth time coming and
the first time for Jorge. I was SO happy he came. Almost died.
This past week has been a blast! I'm not sure what I'm going to do
with my life when I won't be able to teach awesome Hispanic families
all the time, eat a ton, testify more, LOVE even more ...and then end
it with a nice bike ride home with humidity that almost kills and cute
fireflies everywhere. Sounds dreamy, right? :)

Love you all so much!

July 7, 2014 Chicago 5th

Oh elllooo!
Week was crazy! Got a lot done.

Monday. Organized a little group of Hnas to go down to the Aquarium to celebrate my birthday. I'm convinced the aquarium in ABQ is larger and has cooler fish. If a Chicagoan ever tells you to wait in line for 1.5 hours outside to go to the Aquarium...DONT LISTEN TO THEM. The company was excellent though, so that was nice :) H.Ramirez, being the Mexican that she is, made me a piñata. And H.Kenedy made me the most cat fabulous card eva! I'm attaching photos. Now on to missionary things that matter.

On Tuesday, President and Sister Woodbury went out with us for two of our lessons. BEST THING EVER! That was a first for me. Everything might have been in Spanish...and they might have only understood a little...but President shared his testimony in what little Spanish he knew, AND IT WAS AWESOME! Andddddd, afterwards- they took us out for ice cream for my birthday! #bestnightever

Wednesday. Taught English to this adorable little family that moved into our ward a few weeks ago from Guatemala. The two high school aged girls know just about nothing in English, which is kind of expected...so we're trying to help them out with the basics :) They're adorable though! Haha, they're confused about me being a 'New' Mexican, why I'm not brown if I'm from there, and why the whole state doesn't speak Spanish. Haha. Sighhh. Anyway. Later that evening we walked for about an hour (no buses for some reason?) trying to get to the bishops house, which is in the other Hnas area. Took what we though would be a shortcut, and ended up on the wrong side of the freeway. Figured by the time we back tracked and actually got there, it's be too late and we'd have to leave for our next apt. Soo then we walked allllll the way back to our area on to our next apt. And to make it all better, it was raining on us. But more like a sleet almost snow kinda thing. It was weird, but wonderful! Haha. Friday. One thing I've learned about Spanish wards....when they have a party, it's a party. They got together at about 10am at the park...we got there at about 3, left at 5ish...and they were still going strong. It was a good time though! Nothing like carne asada fresh off the grill while the members bust out their guitars and start singing away #livingtheMexicandream.

Saturday could be referred to as super service Saturday. These two cute, older Hnas, who aren't actually related, invited us over for lunch...and then had us paint one of their rooms. These two ladies probably win the award for funniest old ladies. They're roommates and DO NOT get along. Haha, guaranteed, one will disagree with what the other says or likes, just to argue about it. It makes for entertaining times, that's for sure. The one that originally invited us over started making pancakes- but the other said you can't eat pancakes for lunch, so she made us each eat 2 tamales (they were so weird! {they're from Honduras which explains it}Rather than meat on the inside, it was just straight corn/masa stuff. Basically a tamale-shaped, corn bread thing, wrapped in corn husk. You following? Topped with Mexican cream on top) beforehand, and then fried us up some yucca(?) to eat afterwards. Almost died.

JOSE CAME TO CHURCH YESTERDAY!!!!!!!! (he's the adorable elderly man that I love!) ......and then he told us that he was polygamist for a while and had more than one wife...........sooooooooooo.....that makes the whole marriage-to-his-active- member-roommate-thing-before -baptism a little more difficult. Sighh. One step forward. Two steps back. But it's alright! Because he's still reading.... And he's trying as hard as he can, despite his poor health conditions, to come to church and do what's right. BLESSINGS, people. He'll be baptized soon. No doubt. Oh wait. How could I forget!! President came to our lesson with Jose, and we talked to him about the Spirit World and tied it into temple work...and towards the end, Jose went off about how blessed he is to have heard the gospel during his life (even though he's had to wait 80+ years)...and I felt impressed to tell him how his diseased spouse and other family members didn't have that opportunity in THIS life, but are waiting for him to do their work for them....Jose got his cute little old man grin....and then President, again, probably not understanding very much about what was going on, testified of the same thing #doublewitness #Spiritguidedtestimonies #backedmeupwithoutknowing . Ah. So awesome.

I know that this is the Lord's work, and that we get to be His little helpers. I've come to be more aware of how mindful Heavenly Father is of us and EVERY aspect of our lives. I know He's watching over us. Always!
I love you all so much!

Meet Genesis! You could say we're BFFs. She was going thru pictures on my iPad one time and now always asks to see 'the babies'....referring to Audrey, William, and Clinton. She thinks they're all adorable! Her mom sent me this picture. She asked to do her hair like me. Ohhhhhoo! Melts my little heart.

H.Kenedy made me the most cat fabulous birthday card!

June 30, 2014 Chicago 5th

Hello helllooooo!
Can anyone else believe that this week concludes the transfer? Seriously can't believe I've been here for 6 weeks.
Looking back, we did an unusual amount of moving people this week. Once on Tuesday and double dose on Friday. Talk about getting ripped. I'm now a professional at packing and moving heavy boxes. . Speaking of service. We went to the temple on Saturday morning! We went with the coolest lady, Hna Muller <--- random, non-Hispanic last name, who was baptized about two months ago. Seriously such a gem. One of the Hnas that originally taught her came up to the temple from Blue Island, which is a nice hour or so. Us? We didn't want H.Muller to go by herself, so we woke up EXTRA early to be on the bus by 5:30 so that we could be at the temple by 8...we had to switch a few buses. Haha. We were all falling asleep a little, but it was so worth it! Two parts that made it EVEN more special.....before doing the baptisms, the temple president wanted to come in and talk a little to us- mostly just Hermana. Who got to translate? This girl! It might not have all been perfect, but as usual, the Spirit made up for the words I lacked. I know I know, you have to be pretty spiritual and in tune with the Spirit as a temple president...but really, his words...right on point :) He even got a little choked and we all got teary eyed, when the temple matron told us that one of the names that Hna would be baptized for had been waiting for 297 years. Can you imagine?

Second highlight? Standing outside afterwards taking pictures....when who comes out of the temple?....the one and only Hna Flores! It was a longish walk for her to get from the temple to me- and I couldn't tell who it was from a distance, but when she called my name (haha, sounds so lame), there was no mistake that it was her. Hna Kenedy and Reid, if you're reading this, you know exactly what I'm talking bout! She even threw out a few "andele pues"'s for me. Anyway. This time it got real, and all the tears came. This lady is hands down one of my favorite people in my whole mission...she took care of me reallllllll good when I was in my first area. Seeing her at the temple? Ah. Seriously nothing better. I know how hard and what a sacrifice it is for her specifically to go...but she does it because she understands the importance. Sighhhh. I could go on and on about this lady. I WANT EVERYONE IN THE WORLD TO LOVE HER!!!! One more quick story and then I'll be done. Street contacting is NOT on the list of my favorite things to do as a missionary...especially in this area, because there's like a billion people around you all the time.

As of recently, I've been focusing on asking In my prayers to be guided to specific people or have them put into my path. Idk. It's kind of hard to explain. Well, we found one of the people on Wednesday! Goes like this. We were outside the train station waiting for our bus, when I started talking to the cute Hispanic lady selling the typical hand made goodies from her country. (I ended up buying a bracelet, haha). Finally, we get on topic of us being missionaries,etc...and we try and give her a card. What does she say? Something along the lines of, I'm already a member...and never thought you'd ask.  Turns out she's a 'hiding' less active in the neighboring ward. And get this. Almost once every week, the English missionaries go to this train station to contact people. She said she always sees them but they never talked to her, and she couldn't speak to them in English. Problem solved! Anyway. We're pretty tight with her now, and we're gonna get some missionaries to go visit her.

That's it. I hope you all have an enjoyable week! ...and enjoy Wednesday as much as I do :) Or Friday! Can't forget the 4th of July.....speaking of which...'MERICA! #hopewewintheWorldCup #jumpingonthebandwagon #Mexicostillhasmyheart Also. Just met a rockin lady at the grocery store. Her husband is a member and she was baptized just a little while ago in Arizona. They came here and never found a church! Ran into some English elders a few weeks ago, said hi, they smiled and kept walking, WHYYYYY!?!? Haha. It's alright. They've been found again.

Okay, that's it for reals now. Love you all!
