Real talk. We had a week. Hna Trujillo and I have been killing it out
here! She's awesome. She reminds me a lot of Melissa Prater. We
pretty much just laugh all the time...and then when it's business
time, she's pretty powerful. I haven't laughed this much in quite some
time!
Right off the bat, Tuesday. We were riding the bus , almost to our
stop , when this sweet old lady moves towards to us and starts like
this in her broken English, "you two are so beautiful! I love your
skirt. I love your hair. You're Mormons. They used to visit me. Please
visit me. Here's my number. Please call. don't forget me. DONT FORGET
ABOUT ME!". We stepped off the bus. Called her and made an appointment
for Saturday....I'll get back to this lady.
Thursday. We were leaving an appointment , walking down this
neighborhood street, when we see this depressed looking lady. We
walked a little past. Both stopped. Look at each other and say, we
gotta talk to her. When we start walking towards her, she looks up and
says something along the lines of, "oh gosh, not now. Jehovah
Witness'?" Haha no. Mormons. She told us like 5 times she didn't want
to talk and she didn't need anything...not even a hug(!), but Trujillo
really doesn't take 'no' well...so finally she agreed to let us sit
next to her on her porch and listen to her. She told us everything.
And really, it made me sad. It hurts to see people, strangers
included, so down in life...even to the point of contemplating
suicide. But being able to testify of the love God has for us, and in
giving us His Son, made it all a little a better. She told us that she
took us showing up as a sign from God that he's watching over
her....and that she needs Him again in her life. Unfortunately, she
didn't come to church yesterday-- but hopefully we'll see her again
shortly.
WE GOT BIKES. I'm officially a biking missionary. Haha psych. We're
still pretty hybrid. Bikes. Bus. Train. Feet. Whatever we're feeling
that day. Haha biking here though? Woo. It's a little scary. Trujillo
reassures me that I'm not going to die...but still...it's a little
scary sometimes. Adrenaline rush for sure. Friday night we were
cruisin home, when the lady in the car next to me and yells 'GET
PANTS!'. According to Trujillo, I wasn't flashing anyone....I guess
she was just jealous of the fact that we ride hard in skirts.
That night though, we had an awesome lesson with that inactive member
and his two grandsons, Benji and Melvin. Seriously, I want to adopt
these boys so badly. We haven't seen them in a month or so, but they
showed us how they had started reading the Book of Mormon. I haven't
had much experience in my mission teaching kids-- but really, these
two are the best! Such true intention to follow and do what's right.
It's in moments like that how I can see why we're commanded to be like
kids. Even though they were a little confused and kept referring to
the movie 'Son of God' (that's the new-ish Hollywood video, right?),
they were still so perfect.
Lastly. Saturday night, we met with the lady we met on the bus on
Tuesday. Nuts. She went on and on about how she accepts everyone who
talks about Christ, how much she LOVES Christ, how she'd do anything
to follow Christ.....and as soon as we pull out the Book of Mormon,
she shunned us as if we had the Black Plague. Basically quoted 2Nephi
29:3. Multiple times. I guess the missionaries in the past only read
to her in the Bible. That's good and all...but true conversion comes
from the Book of Mormon. I so badly wanted to read a little from 3Nefi
11...or ANYWHERE, really. More so, I wish I would have taken my BOM
that I read and marked EVERY reference to Christ and His atonement.
Open it to any page, and it'll be impossible to deny that it truly
testifies of Christ.
José and Jorge came to church! This is Jose's fourth time coming and
the first time for Jorge. I was SO happy he came. Almost died.
This past week has been a blast! I'm not sure what I'm going to do
with my life when I won't be able to teach awesome Hispanic families
all the time, eat a ton, testify more, LOVE even more ...and then end
it with a nice bike ride home with humidity that almost kills and cute
fireflies everywhere. Sounds dreamy, right? :)
Love you all so much!
