April 7, 2014 - Franklin Park, IL

Hey hey hey!
People. Who enjoyed conference? This girl. I will come back to this.
First off. There's a little analogy that missionaries like to use to
help explain priesthood authority. Ice cream man vs cop. Basically, if
an ice cream man pulls you over and tries to give you a ticket, you
wouldn't pay. But if a cop does? Yes, you'll pay. The difference?
Authority. Anyway. Friday, I had the chance to go out on exchanges
with Hermana Whitney...LOVE HER! We came out together. We were in her
area, and we went to teach 3 girls, ages 13,11 and 9. They've been
visited once, and come to find out, have next to no background
knowledge on Christian beliefs. So we get started on the Restoration,
and within minutes we have a room full of puzzle-faced
girls...."....no we're talking about PROPHETS, they're men....not
profits...." We back up a little and try to bring it to there
level....which honestly, I've never done before, well, to this extent.
The only group of kids I've taught had been taught before and knew a
decent amount. This was hard. I started with the little analogy though
and H.Whitney had the back up. Goes a little like this. Christ started
the police force, and therefore was the chief. Him and his 'captains'
were all killed, taking away the good power. Ice cream men started
taking over; giving people tickets and helping people cross the street
just wasn't the same. The people knew it was wrong but didn't know
what was right so they kept going. One day. Little Joseph Smith wanted
to know which ice cream man he should buy from.....y'all know what
happened here....he was told that the ice cream was wrong, and in
turn, became the new police chief, given power from the old chiefs,
and started it up again. Yeah yeah, sounds dumb...but it clicked for
them! At the end, Hermana Whitney invited them to be baptized and they
all gave us the 'we were baptized as kids.,,we're good...'. And then,
as if the middle child was whacked with a stick in the face, she
asked, 'were we baptized by the ice cream man?' Hermana Whitney and I
looked at each other and told them that they needed to pray to find
out for themselves. Of ALL the people I've taught, these little girls
win the prize for being most excited to pray about Joseph Smith, aka
Chief. They all exclaimed that they wanted to know who baptized them,
ice cream man or the cop. Haha.
We had another ICM vs Cop experience. Saturday afternoon, listened to
GENERAL CONFERENCE. Basically, the Super Bowl for missionaries. Or
maybe just me. We listened, I had a wonderful time....and afterwards?
We, along with Hermana Izu and Mansfield, went to a praise
worship/concert of one of their investigators. Pretty much a Spanish
version of any Southern Baptist church I've ever imagined. You know,
people yelling, 'amen', 'hallelujah', 'gloria a Dios', and the one man
behind me yelling 'maravillosa' after everything. It was quite the
experience. The investigator, Uri, who happened to be in one of the
bands playing, asked us afterwards if we had 'felt Gods presence'.
Mmmm, what I felt? The bass shaking my body and my ears hurting. Don't
get me wrong, the lyrics were good...some, really catchy. The
intentions, also good. But going from conference, to this
concert....wow night and day. Uri, the investigator, came to both
Sunday sessions. I was more than happy that he was able to hear the
voice of the living prophet and the twelve apostles....Mormon
Tabernacle Choir too ;) I know that the priesthood keys have been
restored, and that indeed, this is Christ's church.
Favorite talk(s), you might ask? Easy. The one from President
Uchtdorf, Elder Richard G. Scott, and obviously...President Monson.
Ah. All so good. Favorite quote? 'How much of life do we miss by
waiting to see the rainbow before thanking God for the rain?'.
President Uchtdorf killed it.
I hope you all enjoyed conference as much as I did, and FOLLOW UP and
what we heard. Study it again.
Love you all!
Hermana Mortensen
