December 16, 2013 - Franklin Park, IL

Oh ellloo! Merry Christmas! You could say I've been in the Christmas spirit, more so than usual, the last little while. Have I mentioned I've been listening to Christmas music since August?

Welp. Let's get this started.
Monday night. Volunteered myself and my companions to shovel all of the snow for one of our investigators...Hermana Martinez. The mom of the recent convert who's in the navy boot camp? It was awesome! Well, not so much the shoveling part but the lesson before. This lady has been really closed off, and usually likes to stick with the Bible...but Hermana Pearson really got her to open up. We generally teach her in English, so I figured I'd give H. Pearson the reigns on this one. She started like this...eh-hem...'H. Martinez, let's real
talk..', yes she said 'real talk'...#hatewhenshelearnsthingsfromme...anyway, H.Pearson was just upfront, and I guess that's what we needed. H. Martinez opened up and had a lot of good questions, such as paying tithing, why we have a prophet, and the 'other book'. She even told us how lucky we are... she NEVER lets anyone in her door especially the Jehovah Witnesses...yes, she said that. It was great though, and the service at the end was a nice touch ;)

Tuesday. Transfers. Hna Izu left us and received her new little baby, straight from the Mexico MTC.

Thursday. Picked up our new 2014 Ford Fusion #weridehard 3Nephi14:8-11. And later, got a call from the Sister Trainer Leaders saying they wanted to do exchanges that night. Soooo, I packed my bags and went to the Citayyyy! So good. I was with Hermana Salvaje, it's actually Savage...but I guess when you have a cool last name like that, you can get your badges changed. Their area consists of just a few blocks, so we walked everywhere. I think Hermana Savage was frightened when we went home to eat dinner, I took off my boots, and half my foot was white. Awkward. It was good though. We taught a lot of awesome people, including this one lady who has been taught by elders for months, and then this last Sunday, asked that the Hermanas teach her. Put her on date for the 1st of January :)

One of the sweet little old ladies in our area, Hermana Salgado, (she's a less active, recent convert....her older children, who live with her, won't let her leave the house for church or anything, because she'll get sick). Yeah. She got sick. Did she leave the house? No. Anyway, Hermana Pearson and I thought we'd go visit her in the hospital on Saturday. Not only was her son and daughter (the daughter does NOT like missionaries or the church) there, but also 3 of Hermana's grandchildren, who we've been teaching. They're in the picture from last week of the the Plan of Salvation game. Point is. It was really awkward at first because the daughter wasn't happy to see us. Luckily the kids were thrilled. It was awesome though, because I got the three kids to sing a Christmas carol with me for their Grandma (side note, President Woodbury emailed all of the missionaries two weeks ago, saying we needed to sing Christmas songs to everyone, because people love it and it really opens them up, so we thought we'd give it a try). Hermana Salgado loved it. And also the son and daughter. The daughter even asked if we could have someone come and give Hermana a blessing. SCORE! #singingworks #PresidentWoodburyknowswhatHe'stalkingabout.

One little thought before I sign off. I received a letter this week, and this person mentioned something that I really liked. This time of year, we celebrate/do three really important things- and it's no coincidence that it's in order like this. First, we give thanks for all that we have. Second, we celebrate the Man that has given us more than we even understand. And third, we make goals and resolutions to be better and work harder.  I like that. Hope you all have a fantastic week!!    Much love. Hermana Mortensen
