May 28th, 2013 - Mundelein, IL

This week has been nuts. Crazy ups and downs. From what I understand, that's normal in the missionary life- but I still don't like it.

Last Tuesday, we put Jessica Quevedo on date. I'm pretty sure I've mentioned her before? She's the most solid person we're teaching. Her parents have been members for 2-3 years now. Anyway, for the past month or so, she's been praying about a date- and has been working on getting her long time boyfriend to "put a ring on it".  The date is August 10th! Yes. Meaning we have a baptism and a wedding to plan. Uhhh. Never been to a Mexican wedding - but I can't wait. If it's even a 1/100th of the party we had a few weeks ago for Mother's day- I know it'll be good. Pachanga!! :)  <---Mexican slang right there.

Wednesday, we put Mauricio on date...first lesson and all. Long story short, we found out on Sunday that he was actually a referral from our Branch President. That was an awesome high. And then yesterday, we found out he's moving to Mexico this week. Uhhhh. I don't know how Mexicans get up and move so quickly- but from what I hear, this is a pretty frequent occurrence. Sooo, yes. No baptism there.

Not sure if ya'll have heard- but the church has created a new leadership position for SISTERS. Kind of a big deal. The title is weird...sister trainer leader, or something like that. Anyway, they're essentially sister- assistants...but they get to work more, and don't spend as much time with President.  Deleon and I had exchanges with them this week. Best thing eva. I got to go down south a little to Arlington Heights with Hmna Day. Love this girl. This is her last transfer and then she's going home! But anyway. Things were awesome. We did woorrrrk! Obviously we do work here too- but not as much teaching-wise, since we're still trying to get things going here. I would go into more detail...but this letter is already getting to long.

I almost forgot to mention. A few months ago our Catholic neighbors (nicest people ever) invited us to their church's Memorial Day BBQ. Okay. Nice thought, but crazy weird if we were to show up, right?  Anyway. We ran into them on Saturday- and the husband asked Hmna Deleon what we were doing on Monday, and she said, "nothing". Rookie mistake. I stood there giving her my grumpy cat face. Haha. With President's approval, we went. Ahhh. Not as weird as I thought it would be. 1. People were crazy nice and welcoming. 2. The food was bomb. 3. They were all impressed when the only white person in the whole park spoke Spanish-ish. Hah. It was a fun experience though! We had to eat and bounce, because we had an appt...but the wife told us to come back, because that was just lunch, and they'd be there all day doing their second lunch and dinner.  Ah. Mexicans be doin crazy things!  Loved it though.

This week I've been thinking about this one song that Thomas sent me a while back.... I don't usually like this type of music - but the lyrics are soooo good! He says all these things he's asked for - and what God's given him instead. Favorite part. "I asked Him for love, and He gave me someone in need....He said, 'do it unto him, as you'd do it unto Me'.....He gave me nothing I wanted, but gave me everything I need". I feel like that's life in a nutshell. Last week in District Meeting we were talking about Alma 17 and the Sons of Mosiah. We talked a bit about verse 9-11...and how it's so hard, but how they kept praying and fasting. I made the comment that in verse 9, it doesn't say that they asked for the success they wanted or that everyone would listen and be baptized. But instead, they prayed that they'd be better instruments in the Lord's hands, and do as He would want them to.

Welp. That's my week in a nutshell. Can't wait to hear from ALL of you this week.
Love you all!
Hmna Mortensen
